Automotive timeline

From saddles to paddles

Despite challenges and steep learning curves, Holden and Frost’s workforce adapted to the demands of the automotive industry by transferring their traditional craftsmanship into modern car production.

Some issues in following instructions

What’s a drivetrain?

Other skilled tradesmen underwent transformations. Stirrup makers, accustomed to producing intricate metal components, were redeployed to create differentials and gearboxes, essential parts of the automotive drive-train.

Building cars was difficult

The manager was hell-bent on punishment

Rory has just overheated another batch of engine blocks leaving only a pool of liquid metal. PLUS Lena didn’t like Walter and was experimenting with different industrial accidents to wipe him out.

Holden evolves

Detail Discoveries

Roxie and her EK Holden.

Roxie Hagon, interior stylist, arrived 30 minutes late, missing the deadline to install the new digital dashboard in the EK prototype. Now, she would have to access it through the boot and hope that the rear seat folds down.

J. A. Holden begins

The transition from horses to horsepower.

Began as a leather saddle and harness-making company in Adelaide during the late 19th century. Specialised in crafting high-quality leather goods for horse-drawn vehicles, which limited their market.

Roger Borrie the surfer

Roger is surprised by the salty sea water.

Roger Borrie, from Chelsea, Victoria, had always envisioned himself as a pro surfer, ready to carve his name into the annals of Australian surfing lore and finally entered his first surfing competition.

Popular all over the world!

Long queues!

They didn’t know why they were queuing up.

Carsick had planted volunteer stooges in the crowd to stir up interest in front of city bookshops to get people to consider the Carsick book as a present to their loved ones or friends and colleagues.

Sold out within weeks!

2914 weeks to be exact. Still pretty good.

It became an underground hit (at first it was only available from London tube stations) and was banned in some places which helped propel it higher up the charts (Number 435 with a bullet).

The ‘Chunder from Down Under’

Please stand back.

Sally, now famous after appearing on the cover of the first Carsick book and would make promo visits to car shows and perform by releasing her green vomit every half hour from 10am–4pm (weather permitting).

Collector’s Editions!

Shortage of toilet paper.

The only thing left were the pages from books.

With all libraries raided, the only choice remaining was to purchase new books, regardless of content or price. The sole consideration became the paper quality, as matte pages proved far more practical.

Cardboard cutouts.

Dummy cars were provided.

To protect the stars of Carsick from their adoring fans, cardboard cutouts were driven into car shows by remote control, sometimes with disastrous consequences, depending on your perspective.

Nothing else to do in the 50’s.

No internet, so they had to do something.

Books were highly popular at the time, so when a new release hit the shelves, it would quickly rise to the top of the bestseller list no matter what it was about or how much the reader enjoyed it. 2 stars.

From early Holdens…

No speed limits on production line

The FJ Holden was frequently tested as a prototype on the production line. Since these vehicles were not required to be registered during the testing phase, less emphasis was placed on safety measures.

to hybrid models…

Daily manual oil injection

Jack Ferguson is priming the oil injector on the rear-engined version of the FJ which had the fuel tank taking up most of the back seat area so as not to reduce luggage space.

to unreleased prototypes.

Testing the new FJ in Port Melbourne

Night time testing allowed engineers to focus on performance and design without the immediate constraints of road safety regulations, a practice common during early automotive development.

It all begins with an idea.
It doesn’t even need to be a good idea according to Roger.

Rowan kept asking for the painting to be done PRIOR to putting the glass in the frame, but he thought his instructions fell on deaf ears however his staff was doing it just to wind him up.

Hundreds of pics to choose from.

Everyone loves a P76 and who wouldn’t want to acknowledge that love by hanging a beautiful framed picture above the marital bed or maybe above the mantel piece to keep the kids away from the fire.

The black hoodie makes him look thinner.

The first ever hoodie for summer AND winter!

Yes that’s right. You can wear a Carsick Hoodie in all conditions including autumn AND spring! It doesn’t make you warmer or cooler in any season so its versatility is unmatched as well as unsubstantiated.

Available in shades of black and dark grey.

So many sizes – Medium AND large.

If you need a smaller size, buy the medium hoodie and put it in the dryer for an hour or so for two sizes smaller and four hours for extra small. It should fit perfectly depending on how small you want it.

There’s no green ones, it’s just the background.

Can be worn forwards OR backwards.

The hood part of the hoodie when worn backwards will keep your face warm during the colder months of winter PLUS the warmer months of summer. You may need to drill two eye holes if forward vision is required.
